Roland shimmered in next to Jay, blowing all the papers he had laid out on the coffee table onto the floor.
âRoland! I know youâre mad at me, but this? Really?â Jay exclaimed.
Susan⦠hurt.
âWhat do you mean? Where is she?â Jay asked, throwing the papers he was holding on the couch.
Sheâs in the cellar⦠not moving⦠hurry.
Jay yelled to his mother to call 911 and send them to the café. He ran out the door, barefoot and with no coat on. It was November, and he didnât stop to think how cold it would be outside. He just kept running.
Tearing through the front door, he ran past everyone in the kitchen and descended the cellar stairs yelling Susanâs name as he went. Brian followed close behind to see if he could help in any way.
Roland was floating next to where Susan was laying. Brian stopped short in his tracks when he saw the ghost. He had only been there a short time and had heard the stories but had never actually seen him.
âBrian, snap out of it and help me lift this off Susan,â Jay ordered.
The two men struggled to pick up the heavy metal unit and move it off their fallen co-worker. They pushed the cans aside and cleared the way for the paramedics. Susan still hadnât stirred.
âThey are down in the cellar,â Martha said from the top of the stairs. âJay, the paramedics are here.â
Susan came to as she was being hooked up to the machines that would check her vitals. The first face she saw was Jayâs, and she could see how worried he was. She could also see that he had no shoes on and started to laugh, clutching her rib area as she did.
âWhat is so funny?â Jay asked.
âWhere are your shoes?â she asked.
âI guess I forgot them,â Jay admitted, smiling. âRoland said that you had been hurt, and I guess I didnât think about shoes. I just wanted to get over here.â
âRoland said?â Brian echoed. âYou talk to him?â
âHer vitals are stable, but I think she has some broken ribs. Thatâs a huge welt on her forehead so she may have a concussion. She needs to have x-rays done and may have to stay overnight at the hospital for observation,â the technician announced.
âBut work. Iâm on twelve-hour shifts for the next three days,â Susan moaned.
âIâll cover your shifts,â Brian said, still looking around the cellar for Roland, who had disappeared when the paramedics arrived.
âDonât you worry about work. Iâll follow you to the hospital to see what the doctors say,â Jay commented.
âI hope you are going to go home and get some shoes first,â Susan said, smiling at her boss.
The paramedics strapped her to a gurney, and then they hoisted her up the stairs and out to the ambulance. Jay stood at the back of the ambulance, and as the vehicle doors were closing, he assured Susan he would see her shortly.
His mom walked up from behind and put her arms around him as they watched the ambulance pull away.
